В статье рассматривается проблема влияния образа рыцарства на формирование русской дворянской культуры. Выдвигается тезис о значительности этого влияния, что доказывается на основе анализа ряда классических литературных произведений, воспоминаний современников и работ современных исследователей.

Though the classic chivalry in Russia was not formed completely, the original simulacrum chivalrous behavior became a role model for many breeds of the Russian nobility and their descendants, and that explains the significant interest and actuality of the researches containing the analyses of such concepts.
The subject of my research is the role of knighthood ethos in the formation of the Russian noble mentality. Many Russian researchers have been interested in the problem of chivalry as phenomenon. As a result of the comparative analysis of their researches we have a thesis that there is no chivalry as social institution in Russian society. However, applying source, textual and discourse analysis and historical genetic method to other sources (especially Russian nobility’s authentic documents and sources), I came to a different opinion. Certainly, the interpretation of knighthood ethos in the Russian nobility culture contributed to the formation of specific behaviors and consciousness, as we can see from the written sources.
In my paper, I trace the effects of chivalry ethos to Russian nobility behavior.
Abundant evidences from classical literary writings, memoirs of contemporaries and modern researchers’ studies prove my supposition of the significant role of knighthood behavior model. I consider in detail the essence of such constituent elements of the knight's ethos (and behavior) of Russian nobility as valor, honor, fidelity, gentrice and courtesy. Mentions and use of these categories in the overall context of private correspondence, novels, verses and poems of the 19th — early 20th cc. allow saying of these concepts as characteristic of the emerging Russian national elite’s self-awareness. These elements of the Russian noble knights ethos de facto determined the formation of the Russian nobility (and then of all Russian upper classes and elites) as a closed social structure with its own strictly designated topos (balls, social literary and musical salons, theater lodges, etc.).
Of course, classical knighthood was not formed in Russia. The desire to conform to the image of the knight is more likely associated with the spread of ideas of the Romantic era. However, it was precisely the type of ideas that changed the world around us. Hence I draw the conclusion that, from the very beginning, the simulacrum of knighthood was the most positive role model for many generations of Russian nobility, which determined the brilliant epoch of the 19th century and, at the same time, the national self-consciousness of Russian upper classes (even when the ethos of the noble behavior were lost, and it was replaced by its visibility only).
