Статья посвящена истории домашнего музицирования в России XIX века. Автор прослеживает его традиции в дворянской среде и в народе на примерах произведений русских классиков.

On the Home Music Making in Russian Classical Literature of the 19th — Early 20th Centuries

The theme of amateur, in particular, home music making increasingly attracts our contemporaries. To confirm the increased interest in the sphere of amateur music playing various events are organized throughout the territory of Russia. Taking part in festivals and competitions of family ensembles, I became interested in the historical side of this problem. While doing the research, I have found many special musicological materials and literary writings of Russian classics studying this niche of our cultural life. Using textual and discourse analysis, method of historical reconstruction and narrative method, I try to trace the manifestations of the Russian culture of family music making through the works of Russian literary classics of the 19th and early 20th cc.

In noble families, children were engaged in cultural education from the early age and, as a rule, children received the first musical impressions from their mother. In fact, maternal lullabies were also the component of home folk music making. At the same time, it would be wrong to think that home music playing had always been an aristocratic privilege. No less was it enjoyed among the common people. Music and singing were the indispensable companions on working days, public holidays and home gatherings.

One of the types of home music was singing, especially singing lyrical songs (‘romances’). The literary lines of classic writers vividly depict the lyrical atmosphere of human communication in both noble families and lower classes in Russia of 19th —early 20th cc.

I conclude the theme of home music making is reflected in Russian classical literature of the 19th — early 20 centuries so vividly that it gives the modern reader an idea not only about family music making, but also about the culture of human relations in Russia in this period. Moreover, Russian literary classics’ writings could be also used as sources for the scientific study of this phenomenon from the perspectives of both art history and historical and social psychology: in the 19th century Russia, music was not only the indicator of family culture, means of education, or even a form of family leisuring, but also the way to express emotions and emotional experiences among representatives from different social classes.
