The study of solar-terrestrial linkage and, in whole, space effects on biosphere, socio- and techno- ones are of great scientific and practical significance. It is Russia that deserves credit for pioneering discoveries in this scientific field (A.L. Chmzhevsky’s studies), and it was Crimea that became the leading scientific site for the continuation, already in the late 1960s, of heliogeophysical research, originators of which were Alexander Chizhevsky. Scientific resources concentrated in the Crimea after the WWII, the weakening of rigid ideological control (Khrushchev Thaw), first publications of Chizhevsky’s works led to the formation of unique scientific schools and fields on the Peninsula, primarily astrophysical (based on the Crimean Astronomical Observatory) and biological one (on the base of the Crimean Medical Institute and the Taurida University). Moreover, assumptions about existence of probable additional channels (other than those known in the 1960s) of the solar activity impact on the biosphere were first formulated precisely in the Crimea.

Here, we represent a brief overview of our subject matter that is space weather studies carried out in the Crimea since 1968, mainly in Crimean Medical Institute, Yalta Research Institute for Resort Methods of Treatment, Taurida University, and Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. Using system, source and epistemological analysis, as well as method of scientific reconstruction and historical-genetic method, we set forth the essence and results of experiments that allow discovering mechanisms of solar-biospheric links: effects of ultraweak low-frequency electromagnetic fields and shielding, and also outline the set of studies in space weather effect on physicochemical systems and social phenomena.

In the 1970s-1980s, Crimean researchers received substantive arguments in support of the electromagnetic channel of the solar activity effect on the biosphere. This was fundamentally different from the paradigm prevailing in those years (according to which electromagnetic fields (radiowaves) can affect biosystems only through heating it). Only in the 1990s, in connection with the development of electromagnetic biophysics, the emergence of the concept of the ‘biological effect of microdoses of chemical and physical factors’, the impact of superweak fields on organisms was theoretically justified, and ceased to be a paradox. But by this time the early Crimean works had already been forgotten.

In the meantime, already in the early 1970s, in the Crimea, a systematic monitoring (more than 800 continuous experiments) of the effect of shielding (weakening both the static geomagnetic field and radiowaves) on various types of bacteria was carried out. It was found that the degree of reproducibility improved by 2.5 times in cases when experiments, during which perturbations of space weather (solar flares, magnetic storms) fixed were excluded from the consideration.

Since the 1980s, biorhythmology has been actively developing in the Crimea. Thus, correlations between cosmophysically significant rhythms (for example, periods of the geomagnetic AE index variations) and periods of patients’ admission to the largest psychiatric clinic in the Crimea, electroconductivity of biologically active points in patients, and mobility in mammals were studied and shown.

When studying the effect of crossing the sector boundaries of interplanetary magnetic field, Crimean researchers found an unexpected effect. It has long been found that space weather affects the frequency of suicides, and Crimean investigators confirmed that some of the suicide attacker were concealed suiciders; but more importantly, analysis of 1,062 death dates of suicide attacker in Israel, Iraq and Afghanistan in 1994-2008 showed that the number of such events increases significantly during the crossing of the sector boundary and during magnetic storms. Moreover, Crimean researchers showed that (i) an explosion of creative activity in the 8th-4th cc. BC (axial time), which occurred in ancient Greece, India and China synchronously with the discrepancy of not more than 100 years, coincides with such special episodes of variations in solar activity as the Big Minima; (ii) Kondratieff's long waves and the corresponding cycles of social dynamics are synchronized with variations in solar activity.

Studies of Crimean physicians and physicists have made it possible to include solar-lunar eclipses in the number of cosmic weather phenomena. Thus, it was revealed a real change in some psycho-physiological parameters during the eclipse. In particular, in patients with epilepsy, on electroencephalograms during the full phase, increased paroxysmal activity was noted. The effect of solar eclipse in low-frequency electromagnetic fields was also discovered on the basis of eclipsing observations on the behavior of torsional pendulum.

Extended (since the 1980s) studies of storm glass (Fitzroy retort), currents of the p-n-junction of several serial microcircuits and the currents of standard photomultipliers led to the fact that the signs of space weather effects on semiconductor structures were discovered. It was found, in particular, that: (i) there is a daily variation, whose phase varies greatly with the season; an annual course is observed with a minimum of currents near the day of the summer solstice; (ii) the dispersion of the measured currents is nonlinearly dependent on the Ap-index of magnetic activity (dispersion increases in the geomagnetic ‘calm air’); (iii) in currents, short-period variations that are periods of ‘tens of minutes – hours’ are always presented; some of these periods are fairly stable and coincide with the already known cosmophysical periods.

For better understanding the scope of these studies and their mutual convergence, we include a brief bibliography of our subject matter: a list of Crimean scholars’ reviews and monographs on space weather and response of and biosphere (socio- and technosphere) on its impact.

Each odd-numbered year since 1995, all these studies are discussed at international conferences "Space and Biosphere" that take place in various cities of Crimea, including after 2014. These conferences are still gathering a representative scientific community, including Ukrainian researchers.

We conclude that in the Crimea, during half-century of space weather researches not only new scientific schools were formed, but also promising research programs were developed that make it possible to carry out pioneer studies of living and inert matter as a space object.
