The main problems of modern historical Crimean regional studies are (i) the manyfold used and well-known body of sources and threadbare themes and plots, and (ii) increasingly narrowing (excessive specialization) of research topics. A significant step in expanding the scope of research and forming the communication environment of Crimean regional studies was their institutionalization in the framework of the RAS Scientific Council for Study and Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage that took place in 2016: with the support of the leadership of both Council and Vernadsky Crimean Federal University, the Committee on Cultural and Natural Heritage of the Crimea was established within the Council. This was not just the beginning of the next stage in the development of science about the Crimea. Henceforth the Crimean-studies edition of the Almanac is intended to integrate historical past of the Peninsula with its actual present and just as actual future, to identify and study the specificity of cultural-natural synthesis characteristic for the Crimea. So, it becomes possible to talk about interdisciplinary, integration (including sociocultural and geopolitical terms), and, in this respect, the projective essence of the thematic issues "Crimean Regional Studies: Space and Time of the Crimea".

In our article, we represent a brief overview of the second thematic issues "Crimean Regional Studies: Space and Time of the Crimea", basic principles and approaches in the compilation of its content. Thus, when forming the humanitarian part of the content of the issue, we were guided by the chronological principle: the articles in the headings were compiled as the events described in them approached modernity. When forming natural scientific topical unit, we compiled the articles as the object of the research ‘approached’ from the ‘first nature’ towards ‘second’ one (society) interacting with it and experiencing its influence. Preparing for publication this thematic issue, we gave priority to actual, formerly unpublished studies that introduce new into the understanding of the nature, culture and history of the Crimea, and to interdisciplinary works (expressly or potentially, in their conclusions). In the case of the natural sciences, these were unique authorial researches and analytical studies in problems that are in the focus of the modern scientific community, actively media and society debates (seismicity and weather anomalies). In the case of the historical Crimean regional studies, we gave preference to essays that are based on a diverse little-known archival database, first of all, of the central archives.

We conclude that this provides a promising and fruitful scientific goal for the further development of Crimean regional studies in the widest interdisciplinary sense, as a scientific field uniting the research efforts of historians and physicists, sociologists and geographers, economists and geologists, biologists, political scientists, philologists, medics, and art historians, because this is the way for science about the Crimea to be capable producing new meanings overcoming the narrowness of overly specialized thinking and discovering new research horizons.
