‘... Movement of Philosophy in Christian World’: Inquiries into Ecclesiastical Academic Philosophy of the First Half of the 19th Century in Ecclesiastical Academic Community

Ecclesiastical academic philosophy of early 19th c. played significant role in becoming and development of both secular and religious Russian philosophy and professional philosophical education in Russia. This kind of philosophical thought is professional European-type philosophical branch in the framework of which organic synthesis of European and Russian philosophizing was realized, so that the studying this matter may change conventional ideas about the nature of Russian philosophy and its priorities. On the other hand, the history of ecclesiastical academic philosophy itself as the subject of serious academic inquiry in church (ecclesiastical academic) community is of considerable interest.

The subject matter of my article is history of research, representations and scientific assessments of ecclesiastical academic philosophy of the first half of the 19th century in church circles, as well as religious and philosophical views and methodological attitudes of the authors of these studies. For our research goals I used historical-philosophical analysis and reenactment, critical textual, comparative and source analysis.

Ecclesiastical academic community was the first academic circles, where ecclesiastical academic philosophy becomes the object of special historical and philosophical studies in early 20th century. This was caused by not only to historical interest in spiritual education, but also by desire to show the important role of the ecclesiastical academic philosophy (and especially ecclesiastical academies) in the development of Russian philosophical culture. Moreover, father P. Florensky and P. Kudryavtsev, who initiated interest in the ecclesiastical academic philosophy, have additional motive for such investigation that is to find like-minded among their predecessors and thus represent their own philosophy as a continuation of academic tradition. However, father P. Florensky’s suggestion about F. Golubinsky’s influence on young Vladimir Solovyov is in no way justified and is inconsistent with the fundamental differences in the understanding of the Absolute in Golubinsky and Solovyov.

For obvious reasons, in the Soviet period did not pay enough attention to ecclesiastical academic philosophy, but in those years it was studied in ecclesiastical academic community, and was the subject of dissertation works in theology (for example, M.A. Starokadomsky). Representatives of post-Soviet ecclesiastical academic community tend to criticize the ecclesiastical academic philosophy of the first half of 19th c. believing it was under influence of mysticism and Platonism that sidetracks Orthodoxy. (I suppose, characterizing ecclesiastical academic philosophy, there are grounds to speak about its ‘Platonism’, which is manifested in the first half of the 19th c. in the form of typical for all its members teaching on the ideas of the mind and in positive assessing the teachings of Plato. But this ‘Platonism’ was guided by Friedrich Jacobi’s Platonism and was the antithetic of Schelling’s ‘pantheistic Platonism’).

I conclude about some of the most important and promising areas of study of ecclesiastical academic philosophy. They are as follows: (i) problem of relationship between theology and philosophy in ecclesiastic academy philosophy in the framework of the Orthodox tradition through the eyes of ecclesiastic academy community; (ii) analysis of relationship between rational and empirical knowledge in ecclesiastical academic philosophy; (iii) study of how representatives of ecclesiastical academic philosophy themselves assessed the place of philosophy in the religious world, its importance for both theology and religion; (iv) analysis of the reception of Kantian, Fichte’s, Schellingian and Hegelian philosophy in representatives of ecclesiastical academic philosophy of the first half of the 19th c. and the reconstruction of their critics of this philosophical doctrines; (v) wide-ranging studies of place and role of Platonism in ecclesiastical academic philosophy.

Keywords: Russian philosophy; ecclesiastical academic philosophy; Platonism; sophiology; philosophical influence; philosophical theology.
